Did you know that you can customize your Roku streaming device or smart TV to reflect your personal style and interests? Not only can you change your screensaver, but you can also customize your wallpaper, system sounds, and overall theme. So, if you’re tired of the same old screensaver or want to spice up your Roku experience, let’s dive into how you can personalize it!
How to Change Your Theme
1. Open your settings
To make any changes to your Roku theme, start by navigating to your Roku settings. Simply scroll up from the Home screen to the Settings option in the Roku sidebar.
2. Open theme settings
Once you’re in the Settings menu, scroll down to find the Theme option. Clicking on it will open a dropdown menu with different customization options, including Theme packs, wallpapers, screensavers, and sounds.
3. Choose a Roku theme pack
Roku offers several pre-made theme packs that change your home-screen wallpaper, screensaver, and system sounds all at once. These packs include Western, Jungle, Space, and Kids themes. For example, the Western theme will transform your Roku into a Wild West experience, complete with a themed screensaver and the sound of guitar strums for the remote click.
However, if you love a specific theme but dislike certain aspects, or if you want more customization, there’s more you can do!
4. Change wallpapers, screensavers, and sounds separately
Roku allows you to customize wallpapers, screensavers, and sounds individually. Under the Theme packs option, you’ll find a gallery of different themes. Clicking on a theme will give you the option to preview, download, and set it as your wallpaper, screensaver, or sound.
There are hundreds of individual wallpapers and screensavers to choose from, many of which are created by users. Some may have a fee associated with them, typically ranging from $1 to $3, but most options are free.
While you have numerous choices for wallpapers and screensavers, the sound options are limited to nine predetermined options made by Roku. However, you can pair any sound with your preferred wallpaper or theme.
5. Reset your theme
If you ever want to return to the default Roku theme, it’s a simple process. Just like changing your theme, navigate to Settings, then Theme. In the dropdown menu, you’ll find a button labeled “Restore default theme.” Clicking it will revert your theme back to its original look.
Some of My Favorite Free Screensavers
Now that you know how to customize your Roku, here are a few of my favorite screensavers that you can enjoy without any additional cost:
Roku Photo Stream
With Roku OS 11, you can add photos from your mobile device to create a slideshow screensaver for your TV screen. This feature, called Roku Photo Stream, allows you to enjoy your photos as a screensaver. It’s easy to set up, and you can add your photos through the photostreams.roku.com website.
Haystack News
If you want to stay updated on the latest headlines without actively watching the news, Haystack News is a great option. This screensaver displays a moving carousel of today’s headlines from multiple news sources, accompanied by visuals. You can even get local weather news by entering your location.
Roku Clock
If you need a clock in your living room, Roku offers two clock options: digital and analog. It’s a simple screensaver that serves a practical purpose.
Black Screensaver
If you don’t have a Roku TV that can automatically turn off your device after a certain amount of time, you can use the Black Screensaver to “snooze” your screen. It’s a straightforward option that ensures your TV screen is dark when not in use.
